Turning 18 With the Right Legal Foundation

I launched this on my son’s birthday - with the intention of guiding others navigating this milestone.

My son turned 18 and I built him something.

Not a party. Not a gift in the traditional sense. A legal package. Because I am his mother and I am an attorney, and the most meaningful thing I could think to do on the day he became a legal adult was make sure he stepped into that status with everything in place.

That is the origin story of the Turning 18 Legal Blueprint. A milestone birthday, a mother who knew exactly what that birthday means on paper, and a gap between what most families know and what they need to know before that day arrives.

Here is the gap.

At 18, your child becomes a legal adult. Not in the birthday cake and car keys sense. In the law means it sense. HIPAA, the federal law governing medical privacy, now applies to them. Their medical information is legally theirs alone. You cannot call their doctor. You cannot access their records. You cannot make a medical decision on their behalf without their explicit written authorization. FERPA, the law governing education records, applies too. Their school records now belong to them, not you. And financially, you have no automatic authority to step in, manage an account, or handle anything on their behalf if something goes wrong.

None of this happens because something went wrong. It happens because the law says so. And most families find out about it not before the birthday, but in a waiting room, at a registrar's desk, or in the middle of an emergency.

The Turning 18 Legal Blueprint exists so your family is not in that position.

Here is what the package actually includes. A 75-minute Family Legal Readiness Session where we walk through everything together, the young adult and their parent or trusted supporter, in plain language, no legalese. A HIPAA Authorization so the right people can be in the loop on their medical care. A FERPA Waiver that restores your access to their education records. A Health Care Proxy naming who can make medical decisions if they cannot. A Financial Power of Attorney naming who can step in for financial and legal matters. A plain-language Family Support Roadmap you keep and reference as life keeps moving. And execution guidance so you know exactly what to do with every document after the session ends.

One thing worth saying clearly: the young adult is the client. Not the parent. These are their documents and their legal life. The session is designed around that. We meet together, but the legal relationship is with them. That distinction matters and it runs through every part of this package.

If guardianship comes up as a question for your family, we have that conversation. The package includes a plain-language advisory on both guardianship and supported decision-making so you understand your options. Guardianship filings are outside the scope of this package, and if that path is right for your family, I will connect you with the right attorney for it.

My son is 18. He is a musician, a digital artist, a visual artist, a whole creative person stepping fully into his own life. I built this package the day he crossed that threshold because I wanted his milestone to mean something beyond our family. Every young adult deserves to step into adulthood with the right foundation. Every family deserves to know what they're walking into before they walk into it.

The current investment is $1,950. The permanent rate is $2,500. If your child is approaching 18, or has recently turned 18, the time to start this conversation is now, not after the moment arrives.
