Turning 18 Legal Planning

Turning 18 Legal Blueprint

Key legal changes at 18 - and the documents to address them.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Turning 18 is a bigger legal moment than most families realize. The day a young adult turns 18, the legal landscape shifts. Parents and caregivers who once had automatic authority to access medical information, educational records, and financial matters no longer do.

This service is for young adults and their families who want to get ahead of that shift - not scramble after it.

The Turning 18 Legal Blueprint is a comprehensive single-engagement service designed to put the right documents in place so the young adult’s autonomy is protected and their family can continue to support them - with their full knowledge and consent.

An Important Note: The young adult is the client.

Parents, caregivers, and supporters are welcome participants, but the engagement, the documents, and the decisions belong to the young adult. A parent, caregiver, or supporter may pay for the service, but payment does not make that person the client or give them control over the engagement.

Every session begins with a private 10-minute individual check-in with the young adult before family members or supporters join. This check-in confirms the young adult’s understanding, consent, goals, and comfort with who is participating.

This is their plan. We make sure they know it.

WHAT ADVISORY AND COUNSELING MEANS

Advisory and counseling means we help you understand - not take over.

We explain what each document means, what it authorizes, and what it does not. We do not file documents on your behalf, appear in court, or provide ongoing representation. Our role is limited to the advisory, counseling, drafting, and execution guidance described in your engagement agreement.

You leave with documents, clarity, and a plan. What happens next is yours to lead.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

One comprehensive engagement with one goal: the right documents in place before you need them.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Every Turning 18 Legal Blueprint engagement begins with a discovery call to understand where the young adult and their family are and what they need.

  • The main planning session is 75 minutes. It begins with a private 10-minute individual check-in with the young adult, followed by a family session to work through the documents together.

  • You will leave with something. Whether that is a completed document suite, a clear next step, or a referral to the right resource, you will not leave empty-handed.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • The Turning 18 Legal Blueprint does not include Supported Decision-Making Agreement drafting, guardianship filings, court appearances, special education advocacy, SSI or Medicaid planning, special needs trust planning, college disability accommodations, tax advice, ongoing representation, or emergency legal intervention.

  • Guardianship vs. Supported Decision-Making Advisory is educational and issue-spotting only. It does not include Supported Decision-Making Agreement drafting, guardianship petitions, capacity litigation, court appearances, or agency applications.

  • Execution Guidance means we explain signing, notarization, witnesses, storage, and distribution. It does not include filing documents with courts, agencies, schools, banks, or medical providers unless separately scoped.

  • If your situation requires services beyond this scope, we will tell you clearly and refer you to the right person.

ALREADY HAVE DOCUMENTS IN PLACE? LET US TAKE A LOOK!
Starting at $650

If a young adult already has some 18+ legal documents in place but you are not sure they are accurate, complete, or appropriate for the young adult’s goals, we can review them.

How It Works

  • Submit your existing documents before the session

  • We review for apparent completeness, consistency, execution concerns, and fit with the young adult’s stated goals under New York law

  • If the documents appear complete and appropriate, you leave with confirmation and peace of mind

  • If the documents need revision, we identify the issue and provide a separate scope and fee before preparing revised documents

Either way, you leave with something.

Scope of Review

This service is scoped specifically to 18+ transition documents:

  • HIPAA Authorization

  • FERPA Waiver

  • Health Care Proxy

  • Financial Power of Attorney

Good to Know

This review does not include drafting new documents, revising documents, Supported Decision-Making Agreements, guardianship analysis, benefits planning, education advocacy, emergency advice, or communication with schools, medical providers, banks, agencies, or third parties unless separately scoped.

This review is not a guarantee that the documents will be accepted by every institution or that no future updates will be needed.

Need the full document suite drafted from scratch? The Turning 18 Legal Blueprint covers the full package at $2,500.
